Two Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) schools are set to expand opportunities for students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) following successful funding applications through the NSW Government’s STEM Equity & Access Program 2026 – Round 2.
Cerdon College Merrylands, and CathWest Innovation College Mount Druitt, were awarded $6,070 and $5,000 respectively to deliver innovative STEM initiatives designed to build student skills, confidence and pathways into future careers.
Administered by the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer, the funding supports NSW high school and tertiary students participating in STEM- related courses, competitions and events through several programs including the Science & Engineering Challenge, the STEM Equity and Access Program and the STEM Student Competition Sponsorship Program.
At Cerdon College, the funding will support the Orbispace Initiative, a STEM workshop designed to provide Year 8 students with high-quality STEM learning experiences. As an all-girls school, Cerdon aims to encourage more young women to explore STEM education and career pathways by developing students’ skills, confidence and interest in fields where female participation continues to grow.
Meanwhile, CathWest Innovation College in Mount Druitt will launch Healthcare Foundations 5-week program: Preparing future nurses for clinical placement, employment and career success. This will provide students with a headstart in the medical industry and an introduction to the healthcare sector, equipping aspiring nurses with foundational knowledge and skills to support future study, clinical placements and employment pathways.
Delivered in the heart of Greater Western Sydney, one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions, the program will help develop the next generation of healthcare professionals while strengthening STEM opportunities for local students.
Through these initiatives, Cerdon College and CathWest Innovation College are creating meaningful opportunities for students to engage with STEM, develop industry-relevant skills and explore pathways into careers that will shape the future. CSPD thanks the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer for its financial support and ongoing commitment to increasing access, participation and equity in STEM education across NSW.

The Feast of the Transfiguration, celebrated today on the 6th of August, remembers when Jesus took Peter, James and John up a mountain to pray. There, Jesus’ face shone brightly and his clothes became dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appeared with him, and a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!" This event revealed Jesus’ divine glory and gave the disciples hope before his suffering and death. It reminds us that Jesus is truly the Son of God and encourages us to listen to him, trust him during difficult times, and let his light shine through our lives.

Science and Engineering Challenge At the end of term 2, a group of Year 10 students had the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Science and Engineering Challenge, a nationwide STEM outreach program. The Challenge, held at Western Sydney University, is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences in science and engineering, encouraging them to think creatively, work collaboratively, and develop problem-solving skills. It was fantastic to see our students embrace each challenge with enthusiasm, teamwork, and perseverance. Their efforts were rewarded with some pleasing results across a number of the activities, but most importantly, every student enjoyed the experience and gained valuable insights into the exciting world of STEM. Congratulations to all the students involved.

Y10 STEM CSIRO CPP Careers Day Today forty Year 10 students attended the STEM Careers Day hosted by the CSIRO and funded by the NSW Government at the Penrith Valley Recreational Centre. There were over 35 exhibitors from various industries from medical science, defence, mining, aeronautics, logistics and management. Students were able to enquire and find out more about future STEM career opportunities and hear from experts with a vast range of experience. #csiro # cspd

2026 Cumberland & Parramatta Young Champions Awards Last Friday night, Cerdon College had 13 Finalists in the awards. We had 4 champions for their category: Environmental Stewardship: Isabella, Performing Arts: Bianca, Community Service: Bella, Outstanding Participation: Cerdon College ( we had the most applicants) The Champion of Champions was Bella! (We have had 4 Champion of Champions over the last 6 years !!) Bianca was asked to sing the Australian Anthem and her performance was outstanding. It was a long evening but it was lovely to see our students getting recognition. Their parents were grateful and appreciative of all Cerdon provides their daughters.👏👏🏆

CSIRO STEM CPP Partnership Visit Cerdon College hosted Louise Roberts, an Education Advisor from the CSIRO, who presented to the Y10 STEM students on conducting a microclimate study. Students learnt about the various abiotic factors that affect the heat variations that occur throughout the year based on the reflective properties and material makeup of the ground. The data collected will assist them in developing solutions to reduce the heat signature in the playground areas of the College.#csiro #cspd

Abigail from Year 11 recently competed for the Under 18s NSW team in the Australian Indoor Cricket Championships. After the tournament she was selected in the Australian Under 18s team that is competing in the 2026 Junior World Series in Pretoria, South Africa in September.
